Fishing right
All fishing on Åland is regulated by provincial law, and the fisheries law also decides how the waters may be used. - In order to protect nesting birds, during the period 15 April - 15 June, it is forbidden to carry out spin fishing or other fishing with a drag from the beach.
Minimum dimensions:
The minimum length is measured from the tip of the fish's jaw to the outermost end of the tail fin. Live and undamaged fish must be released immediately. - Pike 55 cm.
- Sieve 35 cm.
- Salmon 60 cm.
- Sea trout 50 cm.
- Height 37 cm.
- Bream 42 cm.
Sensitive nature
In order to maintain the unique nature, public access is limited on Åland. If you go ashore near buildings, ask for permission because the land is privately owned. When traveling by motorboat, stay away from swimming flocks of seabirds so that they do not disperse and become prey for birds of prey. Do not disembark on bird droppings. Fires may not be lit in nature without the landowner's permission.
Some good advice that makes it more pleasant and safer for all anglers:
- Buy a fishing license and buy/bring a map of the area and take it with you on the boat.
- Do not catch more fish than you yourself use for today's dinner.
- Show consideration towards water owners, bathers, professional fishermen and colleagues.
- Keep an appropriate distance from the net guards, sometimes in the form of plastic cages, but also guards with a flag.
- Respect birds and wildlife.
- Consider the environment. Keep nature clean.
Have the necessary safety equipment with you and make sure that everyone in the boat uses it.
Anyone who fishes in another's water area without permission is guilty of illegal fishing or what is known as poaching. Since fishing rights belong to the owner of the water area, he is also responsible for monitoring any illegal fishing. In the Act on fishing, § 75 and § 76, there are provisions on monitoring and handling of goods. Anyone who wants to report illegal fishing must contact the police.
Illegal fishing refers to fishing activities where you violate what is established in the fishing legislation, such as peace times, minimum sizes and unauthorized gear. Illegal fishing is monitored by the authorities.
